Freedom Day celebration : Reconciliation in South Africa

Tuesday the 18th of May, terminale A and terminale B students concluded their English sequence ‘Reconciliation in South Africa’ on a high note with their own Freedom Day celebration.

As compared to the 14th of July in France, Freedom Day is South Africa’s national day. It is celebrated on the 27th of April each year in memory of the first post-apartheid and democratic elections held on that day in 1994. It is a symbol of what has been achieved by South Africans to reach peace in their country but also a reminder that freedom is not granted but rather something we should conquer every day.

This project echoes this sequence as well as all the work we accomplished during the year. I would say it was a ride to maturity land because our teacher trusted us with the organization. Therefore, we couldn't disappoint her and we really had to go out of our way to make sure everything was properly taken care of and that everyone was participating. We carried out an African fashion themed event, it turned out pretty well and we made lifetime memories. The decoration committee made a brilliant job and the DJ set the mood. We held 4 different competitions (speech, fashion, drawing, and singing and dancing) during which we were able to witness the overflowing talent of our terminals.
